Wheat Pete - Maximum Wheat!

Record breaking wheat! At 246 bu/ac (16.52 t/ha, 6.69 t/ac), the UK set a new record wheat yield in 2105, regaining the title from New Zealand.  What is it that UK and NZ farmers do that Canadian farmers don’t?

You can blame it all on water, or a SHORT GROWING SEASON, but if that’s your attitude, you will never be a real wheat farmer!  You simply must set up for high yields, if you ever want to achieve high yields.  There is a clear synergy between nitrogen use and fungicide use (NXF).  Yield responses to higher N rates with fungicides applied at the proper time have resulted in yield increases far greater than the simple sum of added N or fungicides alone. UK research is suggesting this synergistic effect is even greater with the new SDHI group of fungicides, which may offer even more opportunities to growers willing to manage wheat well.  Putting the NXF interaction into practice can move growers to a new level of wheat yields.

And it is not just the N by fungicide interaction. From planting date to seeding rate to tiller management, there are many factors to achieving better wheat yields. All the management techniques to achieve high wheat yields will be discussed, with strategies that allow being able to shut down on added inputs should the water turn off at any point along the way.  Grow MAXIMUM WHEAT!

Kevin Elmy - Cocktail Cropping

Kevin farms 1500 acres near Saltcoats SK with his parents, wife and two girls. We have been playing around with sustainable farming practices, with cover crops being part of the solution. Our goals are to reduce risk and increase net dollars being generated by every acre. This can be done by increasing organic matter, feeding our earthworms, and taking care of the soil.

In the session we will discuss cover crop goal setting, soil biology, cover crop plant groups, seeding techniques, and cover crop end uses. All with the goal of improving our soils.

Todd Hirsch - Have we Reached the Bottom Yet?

Moving into the end of 2016, the global economy remains tentative. The US continues to pick up steam, but troubles are brewing both in Europe and Asia. Canada’s economy is also struggling to gain traction and oil prices continue to bounce around at levels unsupportive of new investment in Alberta. All of this adds up to a still challenged economy. As the province struggles through its second year of recession, the question on many people’s minds is how long will this last? Have we seen the worst of it, and if so when can we expect recovery?

Todd Hirsch is ATB Financial's Chief Economist. He holds a BA Honours in Economics from the University of Alberta and an MA in Economics from the University of Calgary. For over 20 years he's worked as an economist at Canadian Pacific Railway, the Canada West Foundation, and the Bank of Canada. For almost a decade, Todd taught economics at the University of Calgary. He released his first book, The Boiling Frog Dilemma: Saving Canada from Economic Decline in 2012.

Todd provides economic commentary for several Canadian media outlets and is a regular columnist for the Globe and Mail. He currently serves on the University of Calgary Board of Governors and is the chair of the Calgary Arts and Academy. Todd recently received the U of A's Alumni Honour Award.

He also writes an economic update that is sent to thousands of subscribers around the world everyday. Its called The Owl and you can subscribe at atb.com/economics.

Yamily Zavala - Understanding Soil Health

Having a better knowledge about soil components, properties and their interactions is the basis for understanding soil health. In a healthy soil, all the soil properties are interacting without being detrimental to each other. Healthy soils will have good tilth, adequate root depth, enough nutrients, good water storage and drainage, low soil borne disease pressure and quick recovery from adverse climatic events (resilience). To improve and sustain the soil health, it is very important to minimize soil disturbance, to increase plant diversity above ground for greater biological diversity below ground, keep soil covered all the time, maintain a living root system for as long as possible during the year and integrate livestock into the cropping system.
